Cheeni Kum
Cheeni Kum
I request everybody to read the my review of Nishabd first and then read this review of Cheeni Kum…..Which is to clarify that I am a big fan of Mr.Bachchan and a true fan will always write his heart out…..I strongly feel Mr.Bachchan committed a mistake by doing Nishabd and he has totally made up for his mistake in Cheeni Kum…..my whole issue in not agreeing to Nshabd was its rushed screenplay and the hurried treatment…and Cheeni Kum has done just the opposite of it – a much better screenplay with a good flavor of dialogues and yes the other thing which I need to mention here is that the concept of showing elder people falling in love on screen is a fairly new one in India and is not easily accepted….but isn’t it prevailing in our society – yes it is…..for the truth in my statement kindly read the Mid Day of 5th June page no A02 where an article is printed of a 80 yr old man getting married to his 40 yr old maid servant……so I mean that in cinema too the time will change it all….that day is not far off when these subjects will be accepted in India too and will have a wider audience…..
Now getting back to Cheeni Kum….
if I explain CK in a nutshell it would be a story of a 64 yr old established…. popular….. and a bachelor chef who runs a restaurant in London called spice 6 and his name is Budhadev Gupta or Ghaas Poos (lovingly named by Tabu) (Amitabh Bachchan)falls in love with a 34 yr old software engineer Neena Verma or Tangdi Kabab (lovingly named by Amitabh) (Tabu) and they finally decide to marry…..Budhadev gets a green signal from his mother played by Zohra Sehgal and his very cute little angel neighbor called Sexy who has a special bonding with Budhadev and Sexy is suffering from blood cancer…..But every thing is not a bed of roses for Budhadev…his challenge now is to convince Neena’s father Mr.Verma (Paresh Rawal)…..who happens to be 6 years younger to him and Verma strongly objects to their relationship….and how Budhadev convinces him finally is the story of Cheeni Kum……

Cheeni Kum has a feel good factor attached to it…..the witty one liners of Budhadev and Neena are the highlight of the film and are humorous…..the slow and the steady romance which develops between them is too cute and looks convincing…. The mother and son chemistry between Budhadev and Zohra Sehgal is too damn sweet and will surely remind u of ur relationship with your mother…..the chemistry between Budhadev and Sexy is amazing too and the director brings it out in a beautiful manner…. Neena and Budhadev add an element of fire in every frame when they are together…..but Paresh Rawal disappoints a bit but may be because of the character given to him in the film….i mean the gandhian belief of his is fine in the film but implementing satyagrah for his own personal usage is a bit not digestible…..the writer director needed to be clear on a fact that Gandhiji’s satyagrah was meant to be for the whole society and not for a single person…..had the gandhian angle not been a part of the film and if it would have been Paresh’s decision to go on a fast until death would have carried some meaning as the satyagrah of Paresh fails the moment he breaks his fast and lets Neena go to Budhadev whereas the satyagrah of Gandhi was a success…..
Whatever said and done the film has a lively feel to it which puts a smile on your face every now and then…the director has done a good job by keeping the film tight though in the second half it looks a bit stretched for about 10 minutes odd not much….
The music of the film is good…..soft…..but not the one which u will remember for ever….other than the title song……
The climax of the film is a bit touchy…..and Amitabh shows his acting excellence at 64….you have to see it to believe it….its a famous saying that a man returns to his child hood when he touches 60…..its the same character of Amitabh through out the film and especially in the climax……

Amitabh once again excels in his performance…..and yes I am totally against the people who say that he should not do such films arre why should he not do….he is a professional and he has the experience of years behind him to decide which films to do and which not to and he is dong the films which suit his age…..if bachchan will not do these films then who will….Saif? Aamir? Shahrukh? Sanjay Dutt? Kamala hai na….when he did films with younger heroines like Jaya Prada (Sharabi…Ganga Jamuna Saraswati) Rati Agnihotri….etc etc….people said he should work as per his age and now when he has started working his age people have a different opinion…..i mean leave the man alone yaar….let him do what he enjoys the most and that is ACTING……you can actually feel what Budhdev might be going through in the film such is the aura of this genius called Amitabh Bachchan…..the one liners are so witty that u r bound to laugh….like in the scene where its raining and bachchan is walking with his umbrella and he sees Tabu standing and saving herself from rain he invites her into the umbrella but she says that she was going in the opposite direction so he also says that he too was heading in the same direction and Tabu questions but he was going straight….Bachchan replies “who actually mujhe us saamne waale light pole ki shakal pasand nahi aayi isiliye ab is taraf jaa raha hun”….look at his body language when he goes to meet Paresh Rawal for the first time…..Amazing…..though Amitabh behaves like a teenager most of the time in CK but his character’s sensibilities are in place this is visible in the scene when he gets angry on Tabu (Halka sach and Bhaari Sach wala scene)…..The scene where Gunda’s tease Tabu and Amitabh Shouts is also good and you will feel that all of a sudden you are looking at that old Amitabh from a film like Mr.Natwarlal….Naseeb…..or Suhaag…..
